The discussion you are following, "Time to End the EU-NATO Standoff", has a new comment from Miltos .
"EU-NATO relations have been held hostage to Cyprus ever since this divided island joined the EU in 2004." For anyone with elementary knowledge of the facts, this unfortunate assertion by Judy Dempsey is patently wrong and misleading. The fact is that EU-NATO relations have been held hostage to Turkey because that particular NATO member and aspiring EU member has been allowed to occupy, divide and colonize the Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state, with impunity. The EU admitted Cyprus as a full member in 2004 while under illegal military occupation and forcible division by NATO member Turkey. But instead of sanctioning Turkey for its miltary aggression against Cyprus, the EU rewarded Ankara with EU candidate status. And now Dempsey and other apologists for Turkey deliberately and erroneously blame Cyprus (suggesting softly that turkey is not blamesless either) for the disarray in EU-NATO relations and for the freezing of accession chapters with Turkey. And to add insult to injury, she advocates the EU-NATO cooperation in order to address the Ukrainian crisis that is seen as Russian aggression against Ukraine! But both she and the hypocrites at NATO and the EU conveniently ignore Turkey's ongoing military aggression against Cyprus! Why does she not advocate joint EU-NATO pressure against Turkey to terminate Ankara's aggression against Cyprus and chooses to blame the victim of Turkey's aggression for the EU-NATO failure to cooperate? It seems that like NATO and many EU member states, she considers military aggression by a NATO member state acceptable even against an EU member state. And that sinister attitude is what bedevils both the EU and NATO. They practice double standards for their convenience at the expense of the rule of law and common decency. Unfortunately, so does Dempsey's ridiculous tirade against Cyprus.
