Syrian Groups Fighting the Kurds for ‘Turkish Support’

March 4, 2013–The  Syrian opposition groups that  are supposed to  fight against the regime of Bashar al-Assad, have for the past several months opened a second front line in conflicting with the Kurdish armed groups in mostly Kurdish populated areas in the country.
The Syrian and foreign groups such as the Free Syrian Army (FSA), Ghuraba al-Sham, Ahrar al-Sham, al-Nusra front etc., accuse Syria’s Kurds of exploiting the war in Syria to create a Kurdish enclave in  the Kurdish region of the country. The Kurdish fighters known as Popular Protection Units (YPG) since last November have been battling to drive out insurgents of the (FSA) and other groups out of the Kurds territories.
The Islamist groups also accuse the Kurds of either having agreement with the regime, or getting support from the Kurdistan Workers Party(PKK) which is involved in a three-decade-long war with Turkey. The Turkish prime minister  has said several times  that Turkey will not allow the creation of a Kurdish region in northern Syria.
However,  it’s clear that the Syrian groups, virtually all of whom are receiving full support from Turkey, share the Turkish visions when it come to the Kurdish issue.  Another reason that these Islamic groups are fighting the Kurds in Syria, is to keep the Turkish authorities happy in order to continuously obtain support.
“Turkey is afraid of Kurdish independence in Syria, and will make allegiances with anyone to stop them, therefore they are supporting the armed groups in Ras al-Ain against Kurdish militias. The FSA, wants the fighting to continue in Ras al-Ain to keep Turkish support coming,” according to the BBC’s Murad al-Shishani, who mentions  Walid Didigov – a Syrian of Ingush origin, as his source.
“We kicked Kurdish militia out of our areas, but because the FSA does not supply us with ammunition we retreated,” Shishani alleged his source said.
